Implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs) are intended for long-term use to monitor and regulate the patient’s heart rate. The devices sense intrinsic electrical activity through lead electrodes placed in direct contact with the heart. These devices analyze the sensed activity based on programmed detection parameters. The primary function of the device is to deliver antitachycardia pacing therapies, cardioversion, and defibrillation to treat life threatening ventricular tachyarrhythmias. The devices also treat bradyarrhythmias with pacing therapies.
